Feasibility Study of SUSFAM+ Project for Strengthening Food Systems in Western Kenya: Challenges and Opportunities
This feasibility study was conducted in Siaya, Kakamega, and Bungoma counties of Western Kenya to strengthen food systems and improve the resilience of communities in food and nutrition security. The study found that actors in the value chain faced resource gaps, which affected their roles in the value chain. Inefficiencies were identified in supplying farm inputs, farm production, trade, processing, consumption, and waste management in the area.
Socio-economic challenges, environmental inefficiencies, and prohibitive business environment were other challenges faced. The proposed project was found to be viable and could greatly improve the region’s food system, income, and nutrition levels.
