SHORT-TERM ASSIGNMENT
Assessment of the Livestock and Meat Processing Industry in Kenya
We are pleased to showcase the success of the Seed Policy Review initiative, which aimed to facilitate networking and relationship building between key players in the seed industry. The initiative had three main activities aimed at strengthening the seed industry in Kenya.
The first activity focused on establishing strong business linkages among seed companies, input suppliers, equipment dealers, agribusinesses, and agro-dealers. This involved creating a resource database of existing participants and organizing an annual networking forum for the seed industry, followed by county-level meetings in subsequent years.
The second activity aimed to strengthen industry communication, including improving service delivery to members of the main sector association, establishing a seed-focused agenda, developing and hosting a seed sector website, and exploring and piloting farmer feedback systems for seed.
The third activity was focused on strengthening seed commercialization linkages, conducting an evaluation of existing agribusiness degree programs and breeding efforts at local universities, and partnering with universities to ensure the inclusion of market and commercial-oriented courses relevant to the seed industry. The project also aimed to familiarize universities with the seed industry by organizing learning tours of seed and research companies.
